New Apple iPad thinner and faster
Apple CEO Steve Jobs returned from medical leave to introduce the second version of the Apple iPad. Many new features accompany the iPad 2, including the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 4.3.
Apple claims that the new iPad will perform twice as fast as its predecessor. The iPad 2 will come with a 1.2 GHz dual-core A5 processor, which will also allow the graphics to perform 9 times faster than previously. Although the processor is more powerful, the battery life will still work for up to 10 hours.
The next generation of the tablet, which will be shipped in both black and white, will have two cameras. A front-facing VGA camera can be used for FaceTime, the video conference software, while the rear-facing camera can film 720p HD video. A built-in accelerometer and three-axis gyroscope will enhance the gaming experience.
The iPad 2 with Wi-Fi will be available on March 11 for purchase online and at the retail Apple Store in the US.
Apple iPad comes with Smart Cover
Instead of designing a case for the tablet, Apple is including the Smart Cover which is a magnetic shield that fits over the face of the iPad. It also doubles as a stand, where the cover can fold into different shapes to hold the iPad up for viewing or typing. There are a variety of colors, and two materials: polyurethane and leather.
The Smart Cover puts the tablet to sleep when it lies over the screen, and the iPad wakes up when the cover is removed.
Tablet competitors chasing Apple iPad
Since the original iPad was launched last April, over 15 million units have been sold. According to Apple, the iPad has more than a 90% share of the tablet market, which was a market Apple created. There have been 65,000 apps designed specifically for the Apple iPad.
